Why are Elephants important?
Elephants are keystone species meaning they have great influence on the environments they live in. Elephants influence their environments by pushing over trees in savanna, keeping them open, allowing other species to thrive. They also help to keep watering holes open and fertilise the land.
Elephants, being one of the big 5, are also important for many countries economies. The term ‘the big 5′ used to refer to the most sought after prizes for big game hunters, however today describes Africas most iconic wildlife for safari-goers. Therefore, Elephants contribute to different countires’ gross domestic product (GDP) through ecotourism.
