The Elephant Crisis Fund
A Vital Partner in Elephant Conservation
At Saving The Survivors we are proud to collaborate with the Elephant Crisis Fund (ECF), an initiative launched in 2013 by Save the Elephants and the Wildlife Conservation Network, in partnership with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation.
The ECF is renowned for its flexibility and responsiveness, offering emergency assistance and innovative investments to combat poaching, trafficking, and the demand for ivory. It also promotes human-elephant coexistence and protects elephant habitats.
The ECF supports the most effective efforts from trusted organisations, funding both large international NGOs and small grassroots initiatives based on the merit of their projects.
Our partnership with the ECF has been instrumental in addressing the challenges faced by elephants and local communities. One of our most notable collaborations has been in mitigating human-elephant conflict in rural Mozambique. Together, we developed and implemented “Elephant Toolboxes”—a practical and cost-effective solution designed to keep both humans and elephants safe.
These toolboxes, distributed to rural communities, contain a variety of tools such as torches, reflective tape, homemade elephant repellents, and noise makers. These methods allow humans to defend their land and crops from elephants in a safe and non-lethal manner. This initiative has proven to be highly successful, reducing conflicts and fostering coexistence between elephants and humans.
The ongoing ivory crisis, rising human-elephant conflict, and habitat loss make the work of the ECF and their partners more critical than ever. Reads more about the ECF and their work by clicking HERE.
