Cheetah with severe lacerations
Rangers from a reserve reported that one adult male Cheetah of a coalition of brothers was seen to be not taking any weight on his left front limb. He was left for a day and when it still continued, it was decided to dart and investigate the problem.
On closer inspection, he suffered from a bad laceration to one of the pads, which was infected and badly swollen. Without care it is likely the male Cheetah would lose his leg or worse, his life.
Our STS team responded by cleaning the wound, as well as suturing it and applying a long-term antibiotic. He will be sore for a few days, but should heal fully. The Rangers will keep an eye on him, but it seems that we acted just in time before the injury could endanger the leg or indeed the Cheetah’s life.
We will update you with any progress from the male Cheetah.
