Innocent Victim:

White Rhino Saved After Devastating Snare Injury

Every snare tells a tragic story.

Not because it catches the animal it was intended for, but because it so often catches those it was never meant to.

This adult White rhinoceros cow became one of those innocent victims.

When our veterinary team located her, she was suffering from a severe wire snare injury to her left hind limb. The wire had cut deeply into the leg, causing extensive soft tissue damage, significant pain, and restricting her ability to move normally. Every step she took tightened the injury further, increasing the risk of infection and permanent disability.

Although rhinos are not usually the intended targets of these snares, they regularly become trapped by them. Most wire snares are illegally set by poachers to catch smaller animals for the bushmeat trade, either to feed their families or to sell. Once hidden in the bush, however, these simple loops of wire become indiscriminate killers, trapping any animal unfortunate enough to walk through them.

Over the years, Saving the Survivors has treated countless rhinos, elephants, lions and many other species that have become accidental victims of these cruel devices.

A Race Against Time

After safely immobilising the rhino, our veterinary team carefully removed the wire that had become embedded in her leg.

The wound was then thoroughly cleaned and debrided, removing damaged and contaminated tissue before being flushed extensively to reduce the risk of infection. She received antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication and pain relief to help control infection, reduce swelling and make her recovery as comfortable as possible.

Without intervention, injuries like this frequently deteriorate. Deep tissue damage can lead to severe infection, permanent lameness, or even death if left untreated.

Thanks to the rapid response of our veterinary team, this rhino now has an excellent chance of making a full recovery and returning to her normal life in the wild.

Watching Over Her Recovery

Before reversing the anaesthetic, the team also fitted her with one of our AI-powered Rouxcel collars.

This innovative technology allows us to remotely monitor her movements over the coming weeks, providing valuable information about how well she is recovering. If her movement patterns suggest she is struggling or her condition deteriorates, we can respond quickly and provide further veterinary care if needed.

Technology like this is becoming an invaluable tool in conservation medicine, allowing us to continue caring for patients long after the initial treatment has ended.

Every Rescue Depends on You

Cases like this remind us that many of the greatest threats facing Africa’s wildlife are hidden from view.

A single piece of wire can inflict catastrophic injuries on some of the world’s most iconic animals.

Yet every successful rescue also reminds us of what is possible when people choose to make a difference.

Saving the Survivors receives no government funding. Every helicopter flight, every veterinary intervention, every life-saving treatment and every monitoring collar is funded entirely through the generosity of our supporters.

Because of your donations, this rhino has been given another chance.

Together, we can ensure that when the next emergency call comes, our team is ready to answer it.

If you would like to help us continue saving wildlife in crisis, please consider making a donation today. Every contribution helps us remain ready to respond whenever an animal needs us most.
