A Protector Made Possible by You
Deep in the bushveld, where the threat of poaching is ever-present, a highly trained protector moves silently alongside the rangers. Focused, disciplined, and relentless in her pursuit — this is Hope.
Many of you will remember that Hope, our anti-poaching K9, was made possible entirely through your generosity. From her initial purchase to her specialist training — and even the training of her dedicated handler — every step of her journey has been funded by Saving the Survivors supporters.
Today, we are proud to share an update on her progress and the vital role she now plays in protecting wildlife.
A Critical Role in Anti-Poaching Operations
Now fully integrated into operational deployment, Hope has become an essential asset on the ground. She actively supports anti-poaching teams through tracking, patrol duties, and suspect apprehension, working in challenging and often unpredictable conditions.
Her presence alone acts as a powerful deterrent — but it is her performance that truly sets her apart.
Proven Performance in the Field
During a recent training exercise designed to simulate real-world scenarios, Hope successfully tracked a human scent trail over a distance of approximately one kilometer!
This was no easy task.
The terrain was dense, the conditions complex, and natural environmental factors — such as shifting winds and heavy vegetation — made scent tracking significantly more difficult. Yet Hope maintained a consistent, accurate track from start to finish.
This level of scent discrimination, endurance, and directional accuracy is exactly what is required when responding to poaching incursions in the wild.
Ongoing Training & Development
Hope’s success is built on continuous training and refinement. Her programme includes:
- Tracking training in natural environments to replicate real incursions
- Apprehension training, including controlled bite work to safely detain suspects
- Obedience and control, ensuring discipline even in high-pressure situations
Encouragingly, reports show consistent improvement — particularly in her tracking accuracy and controlled engagement.
Real Impact on the Ground
Hope is already making a measurable difference.
Her work contributes to:
- Increased success in tracking suspects
- Strengthened proactive patrol strategies
- A visible and effective deterrent to illegal activity
In short, she is helping to tip the balance in favour of wildlife.
