3 less Rhino poached in 2022.

Is the reduction of Rhinos poached from 451 in 2021 to 448 in 2022 really something to celebrate?

The recent publication of Rhino poaching figures in South Africa has prompted discussions about the effectiveness of state-run properties in protecting the increasingly endangered species.

While the number of poached Rhinos in 2022 was slightly lower than in 2021, with only 3 fewer recorded killings. It is important to note that as a percentage of the total population, the figure represents a higher proportion. Therefore, we cannot consider this a cause for celebration.

Some successes.

Despite these alarming statistics, there have been some successes. Private Rhino custodians have taken on the enormous burden of protecting these animals, even though it is extremely costly. In fact, estimates are that over 60% of South Africa’s Rhinos are now under the care of private custodians. These individuals have managed to reduce the number of poaching attacks on their land, despite the fact that they have to personally bear the astronomical cost of Rhino stewardship.

In 2020 and 2021, the Covid pandemic had a twofold impact on private custodians. Not only were poachers increasingly targeting their Rhinos as the mammal became more difficult to locate on state-run properties, but private custodians also experienced a significant drop in income from tourism due to Covid travel restrictions. However, their unwavering commitment to safeguarding this species has paid off. In 2022 we have seen a reduction in poaching on private land while the numbers lost on state land rose.

It is clear that we still have a long way to go in the fight against Rhino poaching. However, we must acknowledge the selfless dedication and success of private Rhino custodians in this battle. STS remains committed to providing our services to these custodians, and with collective effort and your support, we can win this war.
