A Fight for Survival: Treating an Injured Rhino
In the heart of the wilderness, Saving the Survivors’ lead veterinarian and founder, Dr. Johan Marais, recently came to the aid of a courageous rhino cow who narrowly escaped the devastating impact of poaching. This incredible survivor suffered a gunshot wound to her shoulder, which resulted in a large, painful swelling caused by the bullet’s entry.
Upon examination, Dr. Marais discovered a severe abscess filled with infection. The abscess was lanced, releasing a significant amount of pus, and the cavity was thoroughly flushed and treated with L-Mesitran medical-grade honey—a critical step in combating infection and promoting healing. Remarkably, the path of the bullet through her shoulder blade was still palpable.
To aid her recovery, the rhino was administered a strong intravenous antibiotic, and her wounds were carefully sutured with leather patches. This additional measure prevents oxpecker birds from aggravating the injuries while they heal. Dedicated rangers are monitoring her progress closely, and our team is prepared to revisit her if further treatment is needed.
Though she bears the physical scars of a poacher’s cruelty, including two haunting bullet holes, she is fortunate to have survived with her life—and her horns—intact. Her story is a stark reminder of the relentless poaching crisis and the urgent need to protect these magnificent creatures.
