A Full Moon Rescue:
Saving a White Rhino from Poachers
Under the serene light of a full moon, poachers once again struck, targeting one of nature’s magnificent creatures. This time, a Southern White Rhino cow became their victim.
In the early hours of the following morning, a vigilant field ranger noticed the cow limping, with blood visible on her lower leg. Recognising the urgency of the situation, the ranger immediately called our team for assistance.
Dr. Johan, our founder and lead veterinarian, swiftly mobilised and headed to the reserve. Upon immobilising the injured Rhino, it was discovered that she had been shot through the bottom part of her leg. In a stroke of extraordinary luck, the bullet had missed all the bony structures, avoiding potentially crippling damage.
Dr. Johan and his team meticulously cleaned and flushed the wound, administering antibiotics to prevent infection. Blood samples were also taken to monitor her infection levels. Over the coming days, we will keep a close watch on her progress, ensuring she receives all the care she needs to recover fully.
This incident highlights the constant threat that poachers pose to our wildlife, even under the cover of night. However, it also underscores the importance of rapid response and expert medical care in saving these endangered animals.
