A Story of Hope, Healing, and Reunion
Back in 2010, Dr. Johan faced a life-changing moment when he was called to operate on an Elephant cow in Kenya. She had a severe, long-standing wound on her face, but the situation was far from ideal—no anaesthetic or immobilisation had been prepared, making the procedure incredibly risky. Despite his initial fears, Dr. Johan was reassured by Francis, a dedicated handler, who promised the elephant would remain calm. Miraculously, she stood still throughout the entire surgery, allowing Dr. Johan to suture her wound. Over time, she healed beautifully, a testament to the resilience of wildlife and the power of compassion.
Fifteen years later, in 2025, Dr. Johan and Saving The Survivors were invited to visit a Rhino orphanage in Kenya. To his amazement, he was reunited with Francis, the same handler who had stood by his side all those years ago. The joy of their reunion was overwhelming, and they were thrilled to learn that the elephant cow they had saved together was still thriving.
