Bahati The White Rhino Cow On The Mend
Team STS are glad to report that the White Rhino cow named Bahati is doing very well! Bahati, translating to lucky, suffered like many before her a brutal attack at the hands of poachers. Poor Bahati was shot by the poachers in persuit of her horn. This left her with bullet wounds in her back and a missing horn along with half of her face.
She has been treated by Dr’s Johan and Zöe. Dr Johan is the founder of Saving The Survivors havent ample experience of treating Rhinos from all kinds of traumatic injuries. Sadly it is becoming more and more common that these injuries are at the hands of poachers who are seeking a cash reward. Dr Johan transitioned from an equestrian vet to a wildlife vet after seeking firsthand the species numbers decline as a result of human kind.
Dr Johan and Dr Zöe visit Bahati, the White Rhino cow, where they see the bullet wounds to her back are healing well. They place a cover on her face, where her horn has been hacked off. This should help to keep away any infections allowing her to make a complete recovery!
We will do a follow-up in a couple of weeks to see how she is progressing and relay any updates.
Why should we save Rhinos?
Rhinos play an important part of our ecosystems and without them these environments would not be the same. Rhinos are keystone species meaning they greatly influence their habitats. One way in which Rhinos do this is by wallowing in muddy puddles. This allows watering holes to stay open, allowing not only Rhinos but all species access to water.
The act of wallowing also has a positive impact on the surrounding soils making them more fertile. This is due to the mud drying up on their skin and falling off in the surrounding environment. This mud is fertile alluvial soil which spreads far and wide with the Rhinos movements. This enriches soils allowing for flora species to thrive.
