Discovering the True Big Five
When you hear the term “Big Five,” vivid images of Africa’s majestic wildlife likely come to mind. Originally, this term described the five most challenging animals to hunt: the Lion, Leopard, Rhino, Elephant, and African Buffalo. Today, however, the Big Five symbolise the ultimate wildlife experience, showcasing these incredible creatures in their natural habitats.
At Saving The Survivors, we are fortunate to work with all members of the Big Five. Yet, one member often overlooked is the African Buffalo. These magnificent animals play a crucial role in our ecosystem, though they don’t always make the headlines.
Recently, we had the opportunity to assist with relocating Buffalo bulls for genetic exchange purposes. This complex process is more than just moving animals; it involves detailed testing for diseases like tuberculosis and brucellosis, which pose risks to both wildlife and humans.
Our dedicated team meticulously darted and immobilised the Buffalo, then transported them to a secure holding area. There, we took blood samples that were sent to a laboratory for comprehensive analysis. This careful approach ensures the health and safety of both the Buffalo and the environment they inhabit.
By sharing this journey, we aim to highlight the essential conservation efforts required to protect not only the renowned members of the Big Five but every species that calls Africa home.
Together, we can work towards a future where these magnificent animals continue to roam freely across the African plains. Your support is vital in making this vision a reality.
