Dr Johan’s help with the Lame Southern White Rhino Cow
The reserve staff report that the Southern White Rhino cow, Kunene, is showing signs of being fairly lame on her left frontlimb. This is a sign of concern. Our STS vets are quick on the scene to help the Rhino.
Dr. Johan and the attending veterinarian decided to take some radiographs, as the lameness together with a large wound on the lower, inside part of the limb was a cause of concern. Unfortunately, the results show a bad fracture of one of the bones, together with a possible infected joint.
The cow’s limb was treated locally with an antibiotic bandage and medical grade honey. We also decided to apply a cast to the limb and put her on a course of strong antibiotics. We will be monitoring her closely to see how she responds to the treatment.
Why do Rhinos matter?
It is now our responsibility to save this iconic species on the verge of extinction. Rhinos have been around for millions of years and play a crucial role in the ecosystems they live in.
Southern White Rhinos are grazers meaning they consume large amounts of vegetation, keeping grasses short. This allows other plants and animals to also exist within these environments.
Rhino’s also re-shape their habitats by creating and maintaining watering holes through wallowing. This allows other species access to water sources.
