Happy 6th Birthday, Hope!

A story of beauty, bravery, and deterrence in action

This year, we celebrate the 6th birthday of Hope, our extraordinary anti-poaching dog and one of the most effective protectors on the ground at Insimbi Reserve in the Limpopo region of South Africa.

The past year has been relatively quiet on the reserve—and that is exactly the outcome we strive for. Quiet means Hope is doing her job. Her constant presence on patrol, her highly visible training, and her readiness to respond if needed are working as intended: stopping poachers before they even think about entering the reserve.

Two sides of the same incredible dog

Hope represents the very best of proactive conservation. She is a beautiful, calm, and much-loved dog—but when she goes to work, she becomes a formidable force. Her patrols, alongside her handler, make it clear that this is not an easy target. Regular, visible training sessions and demonstrations reinforce that message, turning deterrence into the first and most powerful line of defence.

Beyond patrols, Hope’s high-profile engagement with the local community and with visitors to the reserve plays a crucial role. By educating, inspiring, and showing what well-trained conservation dogs are capable of, Hope helps change perceptions and behaviour long before crime can occur. This combination of visibility, education, and readiness is why her presence has been so effective.

Fully funded by supporters—every step of the way

Everything we do at Saving The Survivors is 100% funded by donations. Hope’s journey—from her purchase as a puppy, to the training of both Hope and her handler, to her ongoing care—has only been possible because of supporter generosity.

Over the past few years alone, Hope’s care and operational support have cost over $10,000. This includes intensive veterinary treatment following two separate snake bites sustained while she was on patrol, as well as continuous training to keep both Hope and her handlers operating at the highest possible standard. These are essential costs that ensure Hope can stay healthy, safe, and effective in the field.

A birthday wish with real impact

As Hope turns six, her story is a powerful reminder that effective anti-poaching doesn’t always begin with confrontation—it begins with deterrence, visibility, and presence. Hope makes criminals think twice, protects wildlife before harm can occur, and gives endangered species the space to survive.

If you’d like to celebrate Hope’s birthday, we invite you to send her a gift in the most meaningful way possible: by donating to her Birthday Fundraiser. Your support helps ensure that we can always fund her care, training, and upkeep—so Hope can continue protecting wildlife and being, when needed, a poacher’s worst nightmare.

From all of us, and from Hope herself—thank you for making this work possible.
