In Loving Memory of Kwayera
In early 2022, a tiny, 4-week-old orphaned rhino named Kwayera was found wandering alone in the bush. Without a mother to protect and nurture him, his chances of survival were slim. But thanks to the unwavering dedication of our team and the support of our incredible community, his story became one of resilience and hope.
For the first two weeks after his rescue, Kwayera was cared for around the clock by our devoted vet nurse, who bottle-fed him, kept him warm, and ensured he felt safe and loved. Under her tender care, he gained the strength to take his next step. Once Dr. Johan gave the all-clear, Kwayera was moved to The Rhino Orphanage, where he thrived alongside other young rhinos and grew into a magnificent young bull.
It is with profound sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of Kwayera’s sudden passing this past weekend, possibly due to heart failure. While we await confirmation, this loss serves as a painful reminder of how fragile these gentle giants can be.
Though Kwayera’s life was far too short, it was a life filled with love, care, and kindness. We are deeply grateful to The Rhino Orphanage and to each of you, our supporters, for giving him the chance to live, grow, and experience the love he so deserved.
His story is a testament to the power of compassion and the critical importance of our mission. Kwayera may be gone, but his memory will inspire us to keep fighting for every survivor who needs us, ensuring that their stories, too, can be filled with hope.
Thank you for standing with us, in the triumphs and the heartbreaks, as we work tirelessly to protect and save these incredible creatures.
