KRUGER’S RHINOS IN CRITICAL DANGER

We are deeply alarmed by the recent findings regarding Kruger National Park’s Rhino population, as reported in the 2022/2023 Annual Report by SANParks. The statistics are alarming: a staggering 16.2% decline, leaving only 2,060 Rhinos in Kruger, including 1,851 White Rhinos and 210 Black Rhinos.

While there seems to be a decrease in poaching rates, the situation is far from optimistic. A concerning 124 Rhinos were lost to poaching in 2022 alone, indicating an urgent need for action. The report hints at internal corruption and criminal activities, which further jeopardise the already vulnerable Rhino population.

The recent move of disease-free Rhinos to unspecified locations raises questions: Is this a last-ditch effort to save the remaining Rhinos, or is it truly a strategic “range expansion” as stated in the report? The lack of clarity on this matter raises concerns about the security and well-being of these majestic animals.

The decline in the number of Rhinos in Kruger, coupled with the increase in Elephant poaching, paints a bleak picture for our wildlife. This distressing situation only strengthens our resolve to support private Rhino custodians.

With Rhinos becoming scarce in Kruger, poachers are now setting their sights on these vulnerable animals under the protection of private individuals and organisations who now hold the majority of the world’s remaining population.

These custodians, often unsung heroes, are making significant strides in Rhino conservation. Through their unwavering commitment and innovative strategies, they’ve become beacons of hope in the fight against extinction. By championing their cause, we are actively contributing to the preservation of these majestic creatures.
