Lethabo the White Rhino has been Shot
Another tragic case of a White Rhino heifer, named Lethabo (approx 6 years old). We found her with a bullet wound below her right elbow.
We took radiographs to diagnose the fracture. After we cleaned and flushed the wound, we administered long-acting anti-inflammatories. We also administered antibiotics, as she has a draining tract from the fracture site.
She is steadily improving and walking almost normally, so it’s unlikely that she will need a follow-up treatment soon. However, the owner will keep Saving the Survivors up-to-date on her progress.
It is heartbreaking to attend cases like this but thankfully we are able to help due to the donations we receive from our followers.
Finally, thanks toFord Wildlife Foundation and Wildlifevets SA
What is a White Rhino heifer?
A heifer is a cow (female) who has either not borne a calf or has only given birth to one calf. An adult male Rhino is referred to as a bull.
Why are White Rhinos important?
Rhinos are keystone species meaning they play a crucial role in regulating the ecosystems they live in. One way in which they shape their ecosystems is by wallowing in mud puddles. This keeps watering holes open, allowing all species access to water. This is especially important during the dry season where access to water is limited.
