Mourning Rhino Mothers Come Together After Losing Calves
You might remember two months ago, when 2 female White Rhino mothers tragically lost their calves? This was due to two of the older bulls fighting. To prevent any further injuries Dr. Johan Marais and team STS were called in to relocate the bulls.
Since then, the two Rhino mothers have been spending most of their time together. They have been spotted mourning at the burial site of their calves. Due to the dedicated work of their rangers, they are slowly gaining weight again. It is important that they are helped through this grieving process, to get them back to their normal selves.
Thank you to our partners at Insimbi Legacy Projects t/a Rhino Tours for their dedicated work.
How many calves will a Rhino have in its life?
Rhinos reproduce every 2 and a half years, usually giving birth to one calf although sometimes twins. Female Rhinos reach sexual maturity when they are just three years old. Although, male Rhinos reach sexual maturity much later, at 8 years of age.
How long are Rhinos pregnant for?
Rhinos are pregnant for approximately 15 to 16 months. This is the second longest gestation period of any animal, the first being Elephants who are pregnant for nearly 2 years. This is why conservation of every Rhino and Elephant is so important as reproduction occurs over a long time period, meaning it is more difficult for these species to bounce back from low population densities.
