Mwitu’s Story
From Orphaned and Injured to Thriving
At just a few weeks old, a baby rhino should never have to face the world alone. But recently, in the Solio Reserve, rangers discovered a calf — no more than 5 or 6 weeks old — wandering without his mother.
He was in very poor condition. Weak, frightened, and with deep claw marks across his body, most likely from a lion attack, it was clear this little one had endured a terrible ordeal. We searched the surrounding area, but no dead rhinos were found. Sadly, after so much time apart, even if we had identified his mother, she would not have accepted him back. This tiny orphan’s only chance of survival was through rescue and care.
At first, we didn’t share his story. His injuries were serious, and his chances uncertain. But thanks to the tireless work of the veterinary team and the dedicated staff at the orphanage, he began to heal. Day by day, his strength returned. His wounds closed, his energy grew, and his spirit shone through.
Today, we are proud to introduce him as Mwitu — meaning wild. A name that carries both his resilience and the freedom we hope he will one day enjoy.
The photographs tell the story better than words: the frightened, injured calf we first met, and the bright-eyed, healthy rhino he has become.
Mwitu’s journey is a reminder of why we do what we do. His survival was not guaranteed, but because of expert care — and because of your continued support — this little survivor now has a future.
Every donation, every show of support, makes stories like Mwitu’s possible. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for giving him, and others like him, a second chance at life.
