Baby Rhino orphan needs our help!
Saving The Survivors occasionally attend to the needs of baby Rhinos. These poor Rhinos are often orphans after separations from their mothers. In some cases this is due to their mothers being poaching victims. In any case where a baby Rhino sadly become orphans, it is our duty to help these vulnerable animals.
Orphaned baby Rhino calves are fed foal milk replacer, which is closest in composition to the milk of their mothers. Most are fed either via a bottle or bucket, with a teat attached to it. Although, some can be trained to drink from the bucket itself.
Whilst this 6-month-old baby Rhino was bottle fed, he swallowed the teat by accident!
It appeared that the Rhino showed no signs of immediate discomfort.
As the days went on, he started to develop colic signs. Dr. Johan is quick on site to assist and performed abdominal colic surgery on the young Rhino and save his life.
The teat has traveled down the baby Rhinos oesophagus becoming stuck in the small intestine, just behind the stomach causing an obstruction. Dr Johan cuts open the intestine to remove the teat. The operation is a success!
The little calf was put on a drip for some time, but has now returned to his sanctuary and making a great recovery.
