Reflecting on Hope’s Story:
Have We Learned Anything?
Nearly a decade ago, wildlife photographer Adrian Steirn shared the poignant story of Hope, a resilient Rhino who survived a brutal poaching attack that left her mutilated and without her horns. Over 1.5 million people have since watched her journey, moved by her strength and the groundbreaking care she received from Saving The Survivors’ Founder, Dr. Johan Marais, and Dr. William Fowlds.
Hope’s story, though tragically ending in her passing, was a turning point. It cast a harsh light on the devastating impact of poaching on our precious wildlife and became one of the first stories to bring the poaching crisis into the global spotlight, thanks to Adrian’s powerful storytelling and the relentless efforts of Saving The Survivors.
However, despite advances in medical treatments for injured Rhinos, the demand for Rhino horn continues to drive poaching rates to alarming levels. This stark reality reminds us that Hope’s story cannot fade into obscurity. We must persist in our united fight to protect these magnificent creatures.
As we reflect on Hope’s story, it is imperative that we renew our commitment to saving the survivors of poaching and safeguarding the gentle giants targeted by these criminal acts. Your support is vital in our ongoing mission to prevent Rhinos from being driven to the brink of extinction.
