Rescuing a Young Rhino Bull
A Fight for Survival and Healing
Recently, our team was called to assist a young adult rhino bull who had sustained a serious injury during a territorial battle with another rhino. The reserve staff reported that his horn was badly cracked and showing signs of infection, with pus dripping from one area. This injury left the rhino in significant pain and vulnerable to further complications.
When we arrived, Dr. Johan made the decision to carefully remove the top part of the horn using a chainsaw. This allowed us to access the infected area deep within. Once exposed, the area was thoroughly cleaned and flushed to clear out as much of the infection as possible. To aid in the healing process, we dressed the wound with medical-grade honey (L-Mesitran), known for its antibacterial and healing properties. Finally, we filled the cavity with an antibiotic bandage, which will remain in place for at least a week to provide continuous antibacterial protection.
Although the rhino was immobilised, the face is an incredibly sensitive area for these animals. As we inserted the bandage, he flinched in visible pain—a powerful reminder of the physical suffering rhinos endure, especially in cases of poaching. Rhinos are far less reactive to treatments on other parts of their bodies, so we always take extra care when working around their face and horn.
The painful reality is that injuries like these happen all too often, whether from fights with other rhinos or from brutal attacks by poachers seeking their horns. At Saving the Survivors, our mission is to be there whenever these animals are in need—whether it’s protecting them from poachers, treating wounds, or providing ongoing care to those that survive traumatic events.
Every aspect of our work is made possible by the generosity of our supporters. From emergency rescues to long-term rehabilitation, your donations allow us to act swiftly and provide the highest standard of care for rhinos in distress.
Please consider supporting us in our mission to save the survivors. Together, we can make a difference for these incredible animals.
Thank you for standing with us and the rhinos we protect.
