Saving the Survivors: Mission in Action
Our team recently responded to yet another heartbreaking case of rhino poaching, demonstrating once more the urgent need for vigilant conservation efforts. This time, an adult White Rhino cow was the victim, shot by poachers. Although she managed to escape with her life—and thankfully, her horns—she was left with an injury that required immediate attention.
When our team arrived, the rhino was visibly struggling to walk due to an injury on her right front limb. With careful precision, Dr. Johan Marais, our founder and lead veterinarian, darted her from a helicopter to safely immobilise her for examination and treatment. Upon closer inspection, we discovered a gunshot entry wound high on her right side, with an exit wound on her left. Miraculously, no bones or major blood vessels were damaged. Dr. Johan treated the wound, administering antibiotics and anti-inflammatories to promote healing. By the time she woke, her lameness had already improved.
The rangers will closely monitor her over the coming days, and we’re hopeful that she’ll continue to recover well. However, if she requires further assistance, we’ll be ready to respond once again.
