Seha’s Journey from Survival to Parenthood
Seha’s story…
Saving The Survivors treated Seha, a severely injured twelve year old White Rhino bull in the North West province after a vicious attack by poachers. Seha’s owner initially wanted to put him down because of the severity of the injuries. However, he thankfully accepted STS’s offer of assistance in rescuing and treating him. Seha is short for Sehawukele meaning ‘have mercy on us’ in Zulu. Unfortunately, Seha was the only survivor after five Rhinos were poached on the same property. Both his horns were hacked off leaving a gaping wound of 49 cm x 26 cm and extending into the nasal cavities.
How Seha created hope from hurt…
Last week, Saving the Survivors received the incredible news that Seha became a father to a beautiful little calf called Daniel. Seha, has certainly come from tough beginnings. However, his incredible journey has lead to this victorious achievement. The repopulation of what is now a near threatened species. This is a true testament that the work we do is creating a more positive future for the species. If we save a Rhino which then goes on to reproduce, that is true conservation. In celebration of this step forward in wildlife conservation we reflect on Seha’s inspiring journey so far.
