White Rhino Bull survives poaching attack
The Southern White Rhino bull sustained severe facial injuries after poachers brutally hacked off his horn and with it half of his face. Dr Johan and our STS team rushed to attend and save the injured White Rhino.
Despite the magnificent male being attacked a few days ago, he still managed to survive the ordeal!
The poor Rhino suffered a bullet through his lower neck, where it lodged somewhere in the muscle of the upper limb. His wound was severe, however our vets determined that it was best for the Rhino to wait a few days before darting and treating his wound. This is due to the fact that darting him so suddenly after his ordeal may cost him his life. Every case and every Rhino is different, meriting their own complexities, but in this case, the expert advise of our vets determined waiting for the Rhino to recover from the initial shock and trauma to be the best course of action.
At first the poor white Rhino was quite lame and weak, but today he is doing much better and eating well. We are hopeful that we can start his treatment in the coming days. We will keep you updated on this, yet another atrocity against the iconic and beautiful endangered species.
