White Rhino injured: Dr Johan and the STS team rush to save the Bull
The Southern White Rhino sustained a severe injury to his lower abdomen from another dominant White Rhino Bull. Here you see Dr Johan performing surgery on the White Rhino bull.
Rhino Bulls are extremely territorial, defending their homes vigorously with their horns. This can often lead to injuries when conflict arises, such as those witnessed on this poor Bull. Conflicts can arise when bulls compete for mates. In some cases, dominant males have also been seen attacking females when they are denied mating.
Our STS vets and Dr Johan offer the injured White Rhino the best chance of recovery. However, performing surgery on the injured White Rhino in the bush under the hot African sun is not always easy. More so for the animal, as if they lie for an extended period in the scorching sun, they can easily overheat which may lead to severe complications.
This surgical procedure took longer than an hour, so the vet performing the anaesthesia decided early on to make a plan and cleverly covered the Rhino in branches as to shade him from the heat! Unfortunately he could not do the same for Dr Johan….
This Southern White Rhino will live to fight another day! Let us just hope that he doesn’t run into this bull again!
We must ensure that Dr Johan and our STS teams are always there to answer that call to action, we can only do this with your support!
