Wild Dogs Translocation
Saving The Survivors, along with partners are preparing to translocate African Wild Dogs from South Africa to Karingani game reserve, Mozambique. We are thrilled to report that the holding bomas are nearly ready. Karingani will receive the Wild Dogs at the end of this month.
The Wild Dogs are being moved between different reserves. They frequently bond artificially, to form new genetically compatible packs. This is essential for the future of the species, as it helps to reduce inbreeding and improve genetic diversity. This is a problem facing Wild Dogs as they live in packs of a mating pair and their offspring. Therefore, there is limiting breeding opportunities.
When reintroducing Wild Dogs to an area, they must be held in a boma for a certain period of time. This is in order to increases post-release success. This notion is supported by Wild Dog experts and is used whenever Dogs are translocated to new areas, or when new packs are artificially formed.
The Wild Dog bomas at Karingani are “state of the art” facilities. This will be critical for the overall success of this historical operation.
Thanks to ANAC, Karingani Game Reserve, Craghoppers, EWT and FordWildLife.
