World Elephant Day: A Special Case Report from Dr. Johan
In honour of World Elephant Day, we’re pleased to share an extraordinary case from the field, featuring one of our most recent and unique patients. Dr. Johan Marais, our founder and lead veterinarian, recently treated an Elephant cow with an angular limb deformity—a rare condition in elephants that is more commonly seen in horses. This marks only the second time Dr. Johan has encountered this condition in an elephant; his first experience was with a large bull in Botswana.
To assess the deformity and determine the best course of action, we used our specialised x-ray machine, powerful enough to penetrate the thick bones of this magnificent creature. The high-quality radiographs provided crucial insights, enabling us to guide the reserve’s team with an informed treatment plan.
For safety, the cow was initially roped, allowing Dr. Johan to administer immobilisation drugs safely. Once she was fully sedated, the ropes were removed, and our team was able to proceed with the examination. Even in her semi-tame state, her intelligence and calmness were remarkable—she seemed to understand the care she was receiving.
This case reflects the unique expertise and compassion that drive our mission at Saving the Survivors.
